You Need To Know About EMF — Here's Why
This topic is considered “controversial” by some, and is still an ongoing conversation. However, the research conducted on EMF and its effects on the body thus far are hard to ignore. What’s even more compelling are the proven and trackable improvements shown in various areas when subjects avoid long exposure to EMF.
What Is EMF?:
EMF, or electromagnetic fields, are areas of energy that surround electrical activity. Essentially, EMFs are produced by anything that uses or generates electricity, including power lines, computers, cell phones, microwaves, and even household wiring
There are two main types of EMFs:
-
Non-ionizing radiation: Low-frequency EMF. Most commonly associated with everyday devices like cell phones and electric appliances. Visible light is also in this category.
-
Ionizing radiation: Higher in energy. Includes things like X-rays and ultraviolet light.
Scientific studies suggest that with increasing exposure to EMF radiation promotes harmful oxidative processes within our cells, which have overall negative effects on our health and well-being. With more connected mobile devices on the market than ever (and in our homes), it's crucial to increase our awareness of the risks of this all-penetrating technology.
The Dangers of EMF:
According to Martin Pall, Ph.D, overexposure to non-ionizing radiation leads to, among other things, free radical formation and oxidative stress. The areas of your body that are at the greatest risk of harm are your brain, testes, nervous system, SA Node - the "natural pacemaker" of your heart, and the retina.
The following is a list of negative impacts EMF radiation can have on our cells and bodies, according to various studies:
- Damage to Childhood Development
- Affects Cell Growth
-
Reduced Brain Function
- Reduced Sperm Movement
-
Interferes With Sleep
- May Impact Fertility
- Provokes Cardiac Stress
- May Lead to Premature Skin Aging
- Potentially Linked to Cancer and Tumor Growth

The Effects of EMF on Your Skin:
Prolonged or high-level EMF exposure can lead to oxidative stress in our skin cells. Oxidative stress occurs when there’s an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants in the body and can be damaging to your cells.
Some studies have suggested that EMF exposure could:
- Cause damage to skin cells at the molecular level, particularly affecting the production of collagen, leading to premature aging.
- Disrupt the skin's lipid barrier function, making it more prone to dehydration, pigmentation, or other issues.
-
Increase sagging skin / loss of elasticity
-
Deepen fine lines and wrinkles
-
Dark under-eye circles (due to systemic bodily stress, poor sleep quality)
Of course these skin changes can eventually happen to anyone, regardless of how much exposure they may have had to EMF, as they are normal signs of aging. But the point is that those who do have more exposure to dangerous EMF could develop these effects much quicker (prematurely), and they could appear much more pronounced.
The Effects of EMF Via Your Eyes:
One of the most common ways we consume EMF these days is through our eyes. We are constantly on phones, computers, or watching TV.
Blue wavelengths are utilized in technology (computers, phones, etc.) to produce bright colors and stimulate the brain and body for activity–effectively “force-stressing” people into more work and productivity–by affecting our hormones and neurotransmitters. If blue light is excessively consumed, especially at night when melatonin production should peak, it can not only damage the retina through the ocular surface, but can also stimulate the brain, inhibit melatonin secretion, and increase corticosteroid production, thereby directly affecting sleep quality.
Negative effects of poor sleep quality:
- Cognitive impairment (memory issues, reduced focus and concentration, slower reaction times)
- Mood dysregulation (increased stress and anxiety, depression, irritability)
- Weakened Immune System
- Physical health risks (heart disease, diabetes, weight gain)
- Hormonal imbalances (increased cortisol levels)
- Skin issues (premature skin aging, skin flare-ups)
- Increased risk of long-term health issues (Alzheimer’s disease, high blood pressure)
Melatonin is crucial for cellular repair and a variety of antioxidant and anti-aging processes. Any disruption of these processes would have a direct impact on the health of things like your skin, digestion, and muscles.
In addition to the list above, without proper cellular repair, you may see impacts like …
- Impaired Tissue and Muscle Repair
- Inability to repair damaged DNA
- Disrupted hormone production
- Impaired insulin sensitivity
- Long-term cellular damage
Important Note:
While blue light is part of the electromagnetic spectrum, it is different from the kind of EMF radiation typically associated with health concerns (like from phones or power lines), especially because:
-
Blue light exposure at moderate levels (such as from screens) isn't likely to cause the SAME kind of thermal damage or oxidative stress associated with higher-energy EMF radiation.
-
The main health concern related to blue light exposure is its potential to disrupt sleep patterns by interfering with melatonin production, and eye strain due to prolonged screen use.
-
In summary, blue light (like all visible light) is a form of electromagnetic radiation (EMF) but isn't typically grouped with the non-ionizing radiation people worry about from devices like cell phones or Wi-Fi. Its primary effects are more related to eye comfort and sleep disruption than the health risks often discussed with EMF exposure.
What You Can Do About It:
I know it feels near impossible to avoid, given there are EMFs all around us virtually anywhere you go. However, there are some incredible products out there that you can place in your home or on your body that help combat the effects of EMF. My personal favorites are the Ra Optic Glasses and the Somavedic vibrational healing devices.
Ra Optics Glasses:

Ra Optics lenses are embedded with advanced pigment technology that absorbs the specific, harmful wavelengths of light that you want protection from.
By simply blocking this blue light, you are able to both protect retinal health, and, in the evenings, support the body’s natural secretion of melatonin. During the day, this means reduced or even eliminated eyestrain, headaches, and fatigue; a more balanced state, and naturally increased energy levels, focus and productivity. In the evening, this means falling asleep more easily, sleeping more deeply, and waking up with more energy in the morning.
As you’ll notice, the lenses are colored (unlike many other “blue light blocking glasses” on the market that are clear), making them even more efficient at filtering out undesirable light exposure we are exposed to in our modern/technologically advanced work lives.
I have the two circadians sets; the Popp style and Ram Dass. The daytime glasses are at my daytime workstation and my sunset lenses are next to my bed. I can honestly say that my eyes feel less sensitive (less dryness, redness and watering) by the time my head hits the pillow at night and my sleep feels a lot deeper lately.

Somavedic vibrational healing devices:

Somavedic is designed on the principle of controlled release of energy from precious and semi-precious stones. It creates a coherent, life-supporting field, with a radius of 30 m (100 feet) in all directions, penetrating floors and walls. It effectively mitigates the effects of EMF on the human body (almost like noise-cancellation headphones do for unwanted sounds), so by keeping this device turned on in your home or workspace it can essentially keep your body and mind in a calmer, more balanced state of wellness (blocking the disruptive “noise” EMF can have on the our cellular structures day in and day out).
Somavedic has been tested over time by different independent laboratories and is proven to have positive results on our cells and bodies. Its effects lead to improved speed of cell regeneration, and it has positive effects on HRV, cardiovascular and nervous system. Most of all, people experience better sleep and have more energy during the day.
I have the Vedic in our living room so that it can help to mitigate the effects of EMF for those in our home. The device doesn’t make any noise at all, and is actually a beautiful part of our living room decor. What I probably love MOST about this device is that it restructures water; we place a large jug of our filtered drinking water next to it for about 20 minutes and the water has a noticeably better taste and fullness afterward (we’ve done multiple blind taste tests with house guests and they always say the restructured water tastes better and feels “smooth”). Since our bodies are made of over 60% water, I can’t help but wonder what kind of energetic “bumps” are being smoothed out just by having this in my home!

PROTECTING YOUR SKIN FROM EMF
Because there is evidence that EMF causes cellular stress, we can assume that our skin cells are also affected. So, what can we do about it? Internal health plays a huge role in the radiance, clarity, and texture of the skin, but we also have tools to protect it externally.
Topical antioxidants: Topical antioxidants are one of the simplest and best options here. Antioxidants neutralize free radical damage caused by oxidative stress, which can stave off signs of cellular aging (wrinkles, collagen loss, pigmentation, etc). I use topical antioxidants every morning and evening, as all Beauty Shamans serums and oils contain high concentrations of antioxidants like astaxanthin and vitamin C, from natural ingredients like seaweed, microalgae, and a variety of botanicals.
Something else I really love to use specifically for its antioxidant profile is Herbal Face Food. Their serums and moisturizers have some of the highest ratings on the ORAC scale for providing antioxidant protection to the skin, protecting you from both UV rays and other air pollutants like EMF radiation. It is powerful stuff, tried and tested. I generally apply either a Beauty Shamans serum, oil, or an Herbal Face Food product twice a day. If I'm using all 3 in one application, I do Herbal Face Food Serum first, then a Beauty Shamans Serum, and finish with a Beauty Shamans oil OR Herbal Face Food's “The Cream”.

Healing light: Red light is beneficial for the skin because its longer wavelengths penetrate deep into the dermis, promoting collagen production and aiding in skin repair. Unlike harmful UV radiation, which can damage the skin, red light falls on the opposite side of the light spectrum. This makes it a proven tool for healing, enhancing skin function, and boosting overall skin health.
I love these LED Therapy devices from LightStim...
